PPL - Private Pilot License

A guide for those who are thinking about starting to fly

WHAT?

South Sweden School of Aeronautics, SSSA , is offering courses for Private Pilots License, or PPL . As a private pilot , you are flying non-commercial in good weather. Compare with a car driver´s license . Then you can extend it with an IR-rating for flights in all weather conditions.

There is no geographical restriction on where you can fly, the license is valid throughout the world.

WHY ?

There are probably as many reasons to become a pilot as there are pilots. Someone wants this little special in life, some see it as a future career , some see it as a practical solution to transportation for work or on vacation.

IS IT DIFFICULT ?

It takes some effort in time and commitment , but nothing someone will typically have difficulties with . It's not like driving a car , in the air , you have time to plan the next maneuver , and still no one comes from around the corner ..

The environment in the air is new, and it takes a little getting used to , but difficult is not it.

BUT REALLY DO I DO?

It's more a matter of attitude and maturity, than skills. The aspiring pilot takes a theory course and practical flying lessons led by a flying instructor . You learn all the steps in sequence after a very carefully prepared schedule. Everything goes very calmly. Nothing is left to chance , nothing is skipped.

IS IT DANGEROUS ?

The most dangerous of the flight is the car trip to the airport. If you dare you go by car, you dare to fly!

Again, it's a matter of attitude and maturity . Unfortunately , there are accidents , even in aviation, but the vast majority of accidents are due to pure stupidity . Flying itself is extremely safe.

IS IT EXPENSIVE ?

A PPL costs Skr 75,000.- plus the fees to the Authorities, the medical examination , etc.

A PPL cost about twice as much as a driver's license.

A PPL cost about the difference between a new car and a one year old car.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE ?

Expect half a year.

The theory course is twice weekly for three months. Duringe the theory you normally take about half of the fying lessons , one or two per week. Thereafter you can finish fairly quickly the remaining flights.

BUT THEN , AIRCRAFT?

You rent it.

Of course you can own your own aircraft, and many do , but if you are not flying very much, you can rent cheaper. Moreover, it is quite difficult to own aircraft . Inspection and maintenance of an aircraft is time consuming and must be done by licensed technician .

HOW TO BEGIN ?

Come to the school , take a trial lesson , ask questions . If you like it, join and start the adventure.

Sample lesson is for you to feel how it feels , "if it is something for you ." It is one hour instruction on the ground where you walk through the aircraft , and a half-hour instruction in the air where you also get to fly the plane.
